Lin Qiushi find himself transported into the world behind doors where he makes the aquaintance of the experienced Ruan Nanzhu with whom he has to witness some gruesome supernatural murders and solve various mysteries to survive until they make it through all doors.

Reflections

I really enjoyed this first volume. It's fast paced and the plot is really intruiging. The fast pace initially threw me off as the main character comes off as unrealistically accepting and blasé of the gruesome circumstances he finds himself in (propably to drive things along faster). This negatively affects the emotional impact of some incidents and horror elements at the beginning of the story. The book seems to be even somewhat self-aware of that, having other characters mention how the main lead does not seem like a newbie to the world behind the doors at all. Luckily, this issue practically solves itself along the way as the reader also gets used to the world. All in all, I can't wait to read volume 2 - even more so considering the evil cliffhanger at the end of volume 1.
